Amritsar in the history known as Ramdaspur and colloquially as Ambarsar, is a city in north-western part in India. Amritsar, literally meaning the 'Pool of the Nectar of Immortality'. Amritsar is the heart and soul of the Sikhs and the spiritual centre for the Sikh religion. The city was founded in the late 16th century by Guru Ramdas Sahib, the fourth guru of the Sikhs. He only begin work of the magnificent Golden Temple, surrounded by a beautiful tank, which was meant as a sacred place of pilgrimage of Sikhs. Guru Arjan Dev Sahib, the fifth guru, later went on to further develop and beautify the temple architecture.

Languages

The city of Amritsar is a place with the co-existence of people with different religions, cultures and languages. Among the many spoken languages in Amritsar Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and English are the main ones. The most spoken language in the city of Amritsar is Punjabi. The city of Amritsar is situated in the Indian State of Punjab, where a large part of the people is Punjabi. The mother tongue of these people is Punjabi.

• Joint Families - The very basis of the joint family system is the idea of living together under one roof. The family including the grandparents, parents, siblings along with the extended family that includes uncles, aunts and cousins stay together in harmony.


• Arranged Marriages - The arranged marriage system works thus-families of prospective brides and grooms search for suitable matches, generally within their own community. The decision of marriage is taken collectively by the entire family.


• Inheritance - In the traditional structure, the sons of the family have a share in their paternal property. The property is equally shared amongst the sons and it is handed over to them after the demise of the parents.
